Hospital Costa del Sol Marbella

The Costa del Sol Hospital, Marbella

The Costa del Sol Hospital is located 7km east of Marbella, with direct access from the A-7 motorway, and is the main social security hospital on the Costa del Sol (similar to an NHS hospital in the UK).

The Hospital treats thousands of patients each year, both holidaymakers and residents covering a huge part of the Costa del Sol, including inland regions.

With a large influx of tourists during the summer season, extra medical staff are bought in when the coast is at its busiest. The average number of emergencies increases from 140 to 355 a day during July and August.

In 2008, the Costa del Sol Hospital began its expansion to provide an additional 34,000 square metres and 150 extra beds, making a total of 550 beds. The hospital has a large out-patients department (on the coast road side of the building) and a 24 hour accident and emergency department (on the mountain side of the building).

Voluntary interpreters are on hand to help non-Spanish speaking patients to communicate with medical staff. Over 15% of patients are non-Spanish speakers.

Holidaymakers or residents who may fall ill or suffer an accident requiring hospital treatment between Estepona and Malaga are most likely to be treated at the Costa del Sol Hospital.

Visitors who have no ‘social security’ cover in Spain or part-time residents who are not paying into the Spanish social security system will still be treated for emergencies if they carry a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC Card) – issued from their country of residence.

Parking next to the hospital is limited (demand always outstrips supply) but you can park in an underground car park closer to the main building. Parking costs €2.10 for the first hour and €1.55 after that. Rough ground parking is also available about 2-300 metres west of the hospital.

A regular bus runs from Marbella bus station to the hospital and daily services from other bus stations along the Costa del Sol.

The annexe building will have new treatment rooms, investigation rooms, intervention rooms, surgical areas and three new operating theatres. Facilities will also include a nursery and shopping area.

Apart from accident and emergency treatment, the Costa del Sol Hospital also offers: Radiotherapy, Nuclear Medicine, Medical Oncology, Vascular Surgery, Rheumatology, Mental Health care and Edocrinology.

The expansion to the care area of the hospital consists of three new floors for hospitalisation, the remodelling of the area for external consultations and a mental health unit with 34 beds.
